DIY; Rear wipe and wash on My Maruti Alto

DIY; Rear wipe and wash on My Maruti Alto

I never tried to write down in global language until now. But I wish this is to be shared with everybody; I know these things are not meant to a person, who treats his car like just a machine. Wait wait what I said, cars? No, that’s not a true. Bikes and big vehicles also included. What? Ok I heard that, and yes I am just ending the drama and going straight to the point.

Actually I installed a rear wiper and washer on my basic but functional little cute Alto. That is the thing I am going to write down in detail below.

In 2012, while I was on the highway to Ooty, It was raining cats and dogs!. My car struck in a traffic block. I had to reverse and take a turn to deviate to another route. As the both OVRM;s are useless on rain, and as like I always do, just put the reverse gear and turned back. But I only seen a mud covered glass at behind.

Stopped car and got wet on rain and washed rear glass with a towel;

But on the go, stopping car and washing glass was not a solution. Why?.The Glasses will cover with mud again in a few kilometers. Thanks to the trucks and lorries.

There was a solution on frond windshield installed by company, called wiper along with a small spray to wash the glass with water or shampoo or whatever you filled in the tank under the bonnet. But please don’t blame the car companies for this. Because they are offering rear wash and wipe too. But only for the top variants.

So what, Alto was not a car sold with a proper top-end variant you know.

However after that trip I decided to fix rear wipe and wash on the car. Decision was made but why I took this picture?

I took this picture to prove my brother (who was working with a Maruti ASS) about the necessity of a rear wiper. Usually he demands to know the exact reason for spending money on the car for the things like this. Taking his words here ‘mad and nonsense things’. As like always, I won and He ordered a rear wiper unit from the old Wagon R for me.

Ordering was done but the waiting was not. I brought a washer Motor, pipe and the tank (to accommodate motor for rear glass washing system.) all I collected and fitted. But even after several months of waiting the motor was not arrived on the parts department.

I was fed up and thinking about the next step. No not about manufacturing a motor by my bare hands but just give up the plan. Anyway I called and confirmed from the dealer ‘the motor was not in stock’ by every day basis.

Before giving up I posted about this matter on my alto ownership thread on TAI, and kept thinking “Where should I get a wiper motor for Alto?”

After reading my thread ‘Varun’ (My friend and a DIY expert from Bangalore) agreed to get a motor in a week by himself and the story begins from the package shown below.

Package from Varun

When I received this package I was like a child who got his first toy. I even don’t know how I sat on the office chair for that whole day. Luckily that was a Friday. While on the bus I put the pack on my lap and awake by thinking the installation steps.

Anyway I reached home at 5 on the morning, went straight to the car and started working.

To cut the long story short, It was a successful mission and scroll down for the proof/result.

Stock Switch, ordered and waited for it almost 2 months
You can see the motor through the door pad
The Wiring, it was the most difficult part
Final Result (wash and wipe)

Parts and costs involved
Wiper Motor:-
 2300
Washer Motor:- 300
Wiper switch assy:- 350
Hose:- 25/meter (3 meter)
Washer Nozzle:- 150
Wiper arm (Omni):- 220
Wiper Blade :- 150
Drilling and fixing:- priceless

🙂

Main complexity of this installation was drilling and switch wiring. Varun helped for the wiring and Kuttan helped for the drilling. Thanks buddies

Update

One fineday I just asked to dilip about relays to use for parking position through TAI, he drew a diagram for using a change over relay to pull the wiper to park position after wiper switching of.

Here it is

I searched in local shops for the relay. I got this.

But while trying to implement, I got know. It was a wrong one.

and I got this picture from internet.

I searched this specific one and I got that too.

With that relay I completed my rear wipe/wash DIY project. Now the rear wiper working exactly likes a stock fitment. Tried rear wiper again and again and confirmed. I didn’t even think about the damages can be happened on wiper blade or glass with lack of water under the hot sun! Mad!

Everything was done, and with lots of satisfaction, board a bus. Back to work!.

But on the bus, looking at the movie IPK, yes that was the 5th time they played the same movie. I discussed with Dev about my thoughts and ideas. The discussion seems much better than looking on the screen. She was pretty but the movie was not.

That night, while on the bus, after that chat. I decided to add a feature to the rear wiper, by using that 5 pin normal relay which I wrongly brought.

What, what feature?

no, not a rocket science, But.

If the front wiper is working and reverse gear engaged, rear wiper automatically comes on.

And again cut the story short. It was also a successful DIY.

Please have a look at the diagram below.

Queries are welcome, I will put a video soon. Thank you!
