The MG Gloster Blackstorm Driven

The MG Gloster Blackstorm Driven

I have driven a MG Gloster before. When it was launched and the controversies were going on, I took the car for a long drive that included some proper off-roading and highway runs. It was a comfortable SUV for sure, but it lacks some punch, especially on highways, because of the lazy shifting ZF8. I was also surprised, as you do now, that a ZF8, the cutting-edge torque converter, was doing its duty in a lazy manner, and I felt that after the Jaguar MG is also messed up with the transmission, it loses all the glory. In short, it felt unenthusiastic and slow and did not really accept any commands, whether upshift or downshift.

And about off-roading, the car felt okayish on all kinds of off-road terrain, except for the size, where I didn’t find any issues. Anyway, I agree with you that there is not a proper low ratio and you will get a rock mode, and it was doing almost like a low range.

The engine had enough power and torque. The twin turbo model is very nice to drive if you are ready to agree with the transmission, and on the fuel economy side, for a 2-plus-ton vehicle and 2-litre diesel, it can fetch 9 to 10 KM per litre easily.

Enough of history, and now to the MG Gloster Blackstorm edition and its price in India, starting at ₹41.05 lakh. There are enough changes to make the car liveable; the gearbox calibration felt much better and the steering felt light enough to be comparable to a hatchback and that makes taking this mammoth to crowded city roads easy.

Even though MG Motors claims that there are no mechanical changes in this edition, I guess making it to BS6 phase 2 did the trick. I felt this bigger SUV was comfortable enough to make the Toyota Fortuner jealous. It drives well too; taking it to the three digits is very easy now, and you can feel the pull of 215 horse power and 480 NM of torque. The engine is so refined that you cannot hear the noise inside more than in a gasoline car.

Apart from these, there are a lot of red accents around the car, and the inside color theme has also changed to black. The dark shade and leatherette seats made the car more premium inside, and the Gloster got electric seats as well. It gets heated and cooled as a bonnus.

The ride quality is the key factor in the Gloster, and for a family SUV, the Gloster scores well. To cut a long story short, the MG Gloster is a family SUV that has a lot of features, including ADAS with autonomous level one, which has adaptive cruise control (still, auto braking will get into your nerves; there is no improvement), a wonderful powertrain and a lot of road presence because of its size and now with black and red combinations.

And let the pictures talk.
