MG Comet, a little car with electricity diet!

MG Comet, a little car with electricity diet!

The car looks funky, not like any car now you see on Indian roads, three doors, four seat and an openable hatch, the space is little though. MG comet the car I am talking about, as the title says, this little car is on electricity diet that too in a slow manner, Which means This car does not support fast charging however, there is a 3.2 KW charger available to fit at your wall.

If you look at it, it might look futuristic and not conservative. There is a small bonnet, probably the smallest on on the car industry. There is a big DRL across the front and the twin pod headlamp situated on the bumper and below that there is the indicator lights. If you look at the pictures, you must noticed there is a openable panel around the logo. That is the charging socket and the MG logo will light up along with other lights.

That small bonnet contains, an auxiliary battery, wiper fluid and some of the other items. Still you have to remove the bumper to access the battery though. There is two wipers which looks premium, by the way there is no cost cutting on the car, from every angle it felt premium.

Side profile looks cool in my opinion, there is connection with both side mirrors via a piano black design element and the window glasses are asymmetrical. front door windows are very big like any other three door cars. and the other two windows also looks big and that helps to get more lights inside the very little car. The twelve inch wheels looks tiny but the wheel wells are also small so the wheels seems fit inside and there is no gaps even you think to upsize the wheels even after getting this car.

There is a running LED bar at the rear too, A few orange lines are there on the rear glass but its not for demising but its the radio antenna. Rear is a bit of curvy and the lights are nice to look at it. the licence plate provision is on the bumper and not on the hatch door and there is two vertical reflector either side.

However if you open that tiny hatch, you cannot see a spare tyre or there is not enough space to put even a small bag, there is a small space though but that space occupied by a puncture kit and the home charger. You can fold the seats separately which means three can sit and put some luggage and child seat anchors are provided with proper seat belts for the rear seats. There are headrests though but it is fixed and not adjustable. If you sit at the back, thats too you will have to fold the seats and climb into the rear seats by the front seats as it is a three door car.

For a small car the space is enough and the thigh support is less. There is enough lights inside, since the windows are big and the only issue is your visibility is hindered by the friend seats, a see through headrest must have helped. The seat material. glass panels and the plastics and everything looks well put together and better quality for a car which cost under ten lakhs.

There is enough space to slide through side to side since this car has a step through console arrangements. There are plenty of leg room available which reminds me the Tata Nano. and the gear console fitted with the manual parking brake, the gear selector, power window switches and a small storage space. The power window got auto down for two and auto up for the driver side.

The dashboard looks very premium, AC vents and that two bigger screens are looked like the jewellery of the dashboard. There are two screens, one is the meter cluster and the other one is the infotainment system. The meter cluster consists a lot of informations. Like which door is open, indicator light flashing and so on with a virtual graphic of MG comet even the cluster is showing motor RPM.

Before talking about the infotainment screen, I think there is a strong mentioning needed about the floating setup of the dashboard. these screens look familiar if you are into Mercedes Benz or BMW in this era, there is a bit of inspiration you can see here. These dual screen are in 10.25 inch in size, and the infotainment screen is very responsive in this category and there is wireless android auto, apple car play is available too. Air Conditioner is not automatic but is will chill the cabin in no time, And the controls felt premium. below the dashboard there is some hooks and USB ports available, and you will have to use it always since there is no glove box on this dashboard.

Two spoke steering with iPod like controls on the steering wheel felt premium too. and the steering got tilt adjustment even though there is very little adjustment available, this steering is wrapped with leather. You can find the Bonnet open liver and an emergency power off switch just beneath the steering wheel.

Ok, these are the features but how this little thing to drive? normally I can start with twist the key or push the button and go on, But in this car you have to tap twice on the break pedal to get this car ready, there is no sound or anything since its an electric. Even though you can see a message says ready on the cluster. The car can go fast if you think about the size. I tried to drive fast and the top speed indicated to 105 on sport mode. Regeneration is also available. and the eco, normal modes are just okay to drive and nothing to talk about. This car is having a solid axle and motor mounted on it, And its driving on the rear wheels. If you try hard, you can drift this car as well, at least on wet on gravel and for this size, comet seems peppy. There is enough range too, The MG claimed range was 230 and if you drive sedately on eco mode, 150+ is easily achievable.

Ride quality is nothing to talk about. You can feel comfortable on good roads but on the patches and pothole, this car felt harsh and unsettled, Thanks to twelve inch wheels and the solid axle at the rear. Brakes are good and felt adequate, and the handling is also felt good on the legal speeds. but to conclude, this is a city car, everything shows that.

And for the pricing, for under ten lakhs, its a bit of overpriced in my opinion. Even though, this car got a novelty feel and felt futuristic and contemporary.
